FEATURED MILITARY RELATED NON-PROFIT~Canines With A Cause

I have been honored to be a part of sharing fantastic military related non-profits and programs available to the military community.  There are so many amazing programs available to help military members active to veterans with all aspects of military life.  My goal in sharing these fantastic programs is that it may help either you or someone you know reading this!

I would like to highlight a fantastic organization called Canines With A Cause.  Below you will find some information about their mission.

I would also like to highlight an article that was written about Canines With A Cause and what their program is all about.  To find that article written by The Deseret News click here!

Canines With A Cause is a non-profit organization helping shelter dogs find homes by training them to work as companion, therapy and service dogs for veterans in need.  Our mission is to help veterans create the kind of bond with their dogs that many people only dream about. We teach, motivate and encourage our participants to achieve harmonious companion and working relationships through the use of scientifically proven positive reinforcement training methods.

Canines with a Cause provides dogs, rescued from local shelters, to veterans and active military men and women suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

The dogs are carefully evaluated at the shelter for behavior, health and overall temperament.

The next step is to vet the dogs which includes spay/neuter, vaccinations and microchip.

The dogs then move on to our “Pawsitive Healing for Veterans” program, training in a local Utah State Prison with assigned offenders. The primary goal of this program is to prepare the dog for adoption with a local military veteran in need.

This goal will be accomplished through implementation of the Canine Life and Social Skills curriculum, a program developed by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers designed to promote training focused on the use of positive reinforcement techniques to create and strengthen the human/dog bond. Research demonstrates the beneficial effects of animals on incarcerated men and women.

The dog is then placed based upon personality traits, size, energy level and other characteristics desired by the veteran. CWAC offers free placement and continual training for approved veterans.

One in four veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from PTSD, depression or anxiety. Veterans return home with feelings of abandonment and, often, have a difficult time adjusting to civilian life. The adjustment can include depression, substance abuse and in the worst cases, violence and suicide. Working and training assistance dogs has proven to be very beneficial to veterans. The bond created by the training process can lessen stress and help veterans deal with the invisible scars of war. Dogs provide love, comfort, joy and help transform lives.

Our Diamonds in the Ruff program provides adoption placement for those dogs who prefer not to train. They would rather just be a loved pet.

Without the support of our volunteers and donors, Canines With a Cause could not sustain our life-saving programs including shelter dog rescue and placement, free dog training for qualified veterans, the “CWAC Comfort Crew” and ongoing medical and food programs for veterans in need.  If you are interested in helping out through Donating or Volunteering please click here!
