The Virginia Living Museum Presents Reptiles! Bizarre and Beautiful February 14-16, 2015!
Great event coming up at The Virginia Living Museum and you don't even have to like snakes and lizards to enjoy it. I have a horrible fear of reptiles but actually found a new appreciation for them through this show. And, if you are a reptile lover than you will absolutely love this annual event.
Reptiles! Bizarre and Beautiful at the Virginia Living Museum Feb. 14-16
Enjoy three days of native and exotic reptiles at the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News, Feb. 14-16.
See exotic reptiles from around the world, including reptiles on loan from Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, including a Galapagos tortoise, an animal that has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. The slow-moving Galapagos tortoise is the largest living tortoise. The tortoise on display weighs more than 120 lbs. and has a shell that is 2.5 feet long. Also see an Asian Cobra, Cane Toad, Giant Day Gecko, Green Tree Python and Waxy Monkey Tree Frog.
Also see the Virginia Living Museum’s permanent residents ranging from alligators to tree frogs in special exhibits, live animal programs and feedings. New this year will be “Lizard Lounge” displaying several exotic and native lizards. See a wide variety of turtles in the popular Turtle Cove. Learn about the museum’s citizen science projects such as FrogWatch and Turtle Census. See the differences between venomous and nonvenomous reptiles.
Exhibitors include Reptile Education of Virginia, Sandy Bottom Nature Park, Virginia Herpetological Society, Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team and Wildlife Responses.
Reptiles are perhaps the most misunderstood and feared creatures on earth but they are also fascinating and exciting. Over the course of the weekend, VLM staff will separate facts from fiction and discuss some of the challenges they face in the day-to-day care of the museum’s reptile collection. The VLM encourages guests to do their research on diet, housing, lifespan, legal issues and special needs when considering adopting a reptile.
There will also be children’s crafts and activities throughout the weekend.
“A Sky Full of Scales” will be shown in the Abbitt Planetarium. Discover amazing reptile facts and find reptiles among the stars in this game-show style planetarium presentation. It will be shown at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Monday, 1:30 p.m. all three days, plus 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Planetarium shows are an additional $4 for non-members.
Hours are: Saturday and Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
Cost: $17 adults, $13 children (ages 3-12); ages 2 and under and VLM members free.
