#RockYourHealth Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon

3 September 2015 by

This Labor Day Weekend, 633 active and retired military members will participate in the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon, 5K and Mile in the Sand races. As the weekend draws near, I wanted to share the number of ways supporters can provide encouragement for all participants.

Humana is offering activities such as the Humana Vitality Cheer Squad website, where fans and families can submit words of encouragement and cheers for anyone running the half marathon. Additionally, Humana will have an in-person Cheer Squad lining the last mile of the race to provide walkers and runners an extra boost of encouragement.

  • How it Works:

Visit www.humanavitalitycheersquad.com, search for a runner and enter an encouraging message. Cheer Squad technology will then sync those personal messages with software embedded in each runner’s bib and will go live on the billboard when they cross the 12-mile mark.

  • Freebies and Pre-Race Prep:

Starting Friday, September 4 at 1 p.m., the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll expo will begin. Humana’s free offerings include:

o   Free Biometric Health Screenings

o   Free FatHead Photo Printing: Another option to support runners from the crowd

o   Humana Story Sharing Booth: A video kiosk where runners and walkers can share their personal journey that lead them to ultimately sign up for the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. Participants will then have the option to share their stories socially and inspire others

Last Mile for Runner Motivation

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – August 25, 2015 – Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, is taking to the beaches and boardwalk as the title sponsorship of the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon (September 5-6, 2015) this Labor Day weekend.

As a company committed to a goal of improving the health of the communities it serves by making it easy for people to achieve their best health, Humana’s race activities in Virginia Beach will focus on bringing the themes of health and wellness together with fun, enjoyment and inspiration. Humana is implementing a series of pre-race and race-day activities designed to give runners, walkers and supporters that extra boost of encouragement, and an opportunity to share their personal stories in social media using #rockyourhealth.

“One of the many reasons the Rock ‘n’ Roll series is so appealing is its ability to bring people with inspiring stories together in a fun and healthy way,” said Neil Steffens, Vice President for Humana Senior Products in Virginia. “We’re encouraging people to share those inspiring stories using #rockyourhealth so that they may spur a healthier movement – not only for races like here in Virginia Beach, but in everyday life – to get up, get out there, and get active.”

Race Weekend Activities

To support runners and walkers who are participating in this year’s race, Humana will unveil its Virginia Beach Humana Vitality Cheer Squad website, where fans and families can submit words of encouragement and cheers for anyone running the half marathon. These cheers will be displayed on a giant, digital Cheer Board during the last mile of the race and will be synced with each runner’s bib to ensure their cheers go live when they cross the 12-mile mark. For more information and to submit virtual cheers, visit www.humanavitalitycheersquad.com.

In addition, Humana will have an in-person Cheer Squad lining the last mile of the race to give runners and walkers a standing ovation and provide a much needed extra boost to finish strong.

Off the race course, Humana will continue inspiring runners, walkers, spectators and fans across the country at the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon Expo. Here, Humana will open its video, story-telling booth, where race participants can record and share their personal running journeys and motivational messages by using the #rockyourhealth hashtag. In doing so, Humana will highlight inspiring #rockyourhealth stories captured from its booth and share them on social media channels to inspire and challenge others to share their personal journeys as well.

The Humana FatHead photo printing station, which allows anyone to take a face photo and print it on poster-size paper – perfect for cheering on the sidelines of the race – will also be available for public use, in addition to its free digital health quizzes and biometric screenings. More information about this year’s Expo can be found here.

In addition to having a great race, race participants can do it for a great cause with Humana and Charity Miles. Runners and walkers can download the free Charity Miles app for Android or iPhone, select one of 30+ charities, and for every mile logged during the race, Charity Miles will donate 25 cents to the selected cause.
