In it's 17th year, The Fisher House Foundation's Scholarship Program for Military Children Kicks Off December 13th, 2016!

The 2017 program is open! Submit your application to your commissary no later than February 17, 2017.

Now entering its 17th year, Fisher House Foundation's program was created to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community. The Scholarships for Military Children Program for the 2017-18 school year will begin Dec. 13.

At least one scholarship worth $2,000 will be awarded at every commissary location where qualified applications are received.

Each application will include the following which must be submitted
as ONE PACKAGE:

  • The completed two-page application
  • High school applicants: transcript indicating a minimum cumulative
    GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
  • College applicants: transcript indicating a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale
  • A short TYPED essay. Review the question

Who Can Apply for a Scholarship

Only dependent unmarried children under age 23 of active military duty personnel, reserve/guard and retired military members, or survivors of service members who died while on active duty (also see Heroes' Legacy Scholarship) or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military, may apply for a scholarship. Dependent children of NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Public Health Service, other federal or military related agencies or activities, or DoD civilian employees are not eligible unless they meet the above requirement. Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are currently enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database (or call 1-800-538-9552) and that they have a current dependent military ID card. Where to Apply

An application can be picked up at your local commissary and is also available as a PDF file (click here to download). Application can be filled out using Adobe Acrobat or another PDF software, however once completed, you must print and hand-carry or mail it to your local commissary.

Applications may not be emailed or faxed.

Individuals may apply at only one commissary. Typically this will be the commissary where his/her family does their shopping.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your complete application package is received at a commissary by close of business on the application's due date.

Scholarship Awards Information

The Scholarships
The 2017 Scholarships for Military Children Program will award $2,000 non-renewable scholarships. Prior year recipients must reapply to be considered.

Excepting extremely unusual circumstances, the awards cannot be deferred for future use; the awards must be used for educational expenses incurred during the 2017-2018 Academic Year.

The awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, national origin, rank or service of the sponsor.

Recipients are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Academic achievement
  • Participation in school, community and volunteer activities
  • Work experience
  • An Essay
