Fisher House “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers and so much more!

Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment.

These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide, close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to 21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $360 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Learn more about the impact Fisher House Foundation has on the military community through personal stories such as Will Reynolds.

Will Reynolds, a retired captain for the U.S. army, was injured in an IED explosion during his deployment in Iraq nearly 12 years ago. His injuries led to 26 surgeries and the eventual amputation of his left leg. Fisher House was proud to be there for him and his family throughout his recovery.

Reynolds was able to benefit from the Hero Miles program. He said, “Having family by my bedside was the biggest benefit in my healing process. Hero Miles relieved the financial burden of travel for my family going back and forth from their home to be at my bedside.”

To Fisher House it is important that family is near during recovery. The belief is that a family’s love is the best medicine.

During his rehabilitation with his family near, Reynolds, a collegiate athlete who competed in gymnastics at West Point found comfort in sports during his recovery. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, disabled veterans who participate in adaptive sports report benefits such as less stress, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, fewer secondary medical conditions, higher achievement in education and employment, and more independence.

Reynolds excelled in sports post-recovery and competed in several Invictus Games. Invictus means ‘unconquered’ and the games seek to embody the fighting spirit of the wounded, injured and sick military service members and veterans and what these tenacious men and women can achieve post injury. Last year’s Invictus Games saw over 500 competitors from 15 nations. Reynolds won three bronze medals in the 2014 games and served as co-captain for the 2016 US Team. He is a great example of someone continuing to achieve their dreams despite a major setback and would provide a feel-good message to viewers.

Fisher House Foundation has had a huge impact on military members and families lives by providing them with comfort during difficult times.  Will Reynolds is just one of thousands of stories on how the Fisher House has left an impact.  If you would like to learn more about the Fisher House Foundation please visit their website or social media channels below.  If you would like to GET INVOLVED in the Fisher House Foundation Mission please click here.
