Mariners’ Museum Announces $1 Admission is Back This Summer
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Mariners’ Museum and Park seeks to unite people. Memorial Day through Labor Day, admission to the Museum will be reduced to $1 per person to engage as many people as possible because through the world’s waters, through our shared maritime heritage, we are all mariners. $1 admission was made possible, in part, by the City of Newport News and Newport News Shipbuilding.
We are all connected to the world's waters and, regardless of who or where we are, we are united as one global community through our shared maritime heritage. Everyone's story has ties to the water - perhaps by career, family, or leisure - and The Mariners' Museum and Park is here to tell your story. We are your museum.
Throughout the summer, staff and volunteers will bring the exhibitions to life through interpretation, stories, and conversations with guests. The Museum team will bring out special artifacts to enhance the visitor experience and foster a deeper connection with each of our guests. Interactive family-friendly programs will be offered as well.
In 2016 and 2017, the Museum experimented with $1 admission and saw over 250% increase in summer visitation. The $1 admission promotion will continue to serve the community by breaking down barriers, financially and culturally, and by allowing people of all backgrounds to come and experience the Museum’s collection.
Howard Hoege, President and CEO of The Mariners’ Museum and Park, stated, “Our community has turned out in a big way over the past two summers - popping in for an hour to see an exhibit or two, or spending the day with us: on the Noland Trail in the morning, lunch in the cafe, and the galleries and a movie in the afternoon. We have even seen a number of people bring their family and friends from out-of-town to see our world-class collection.”
A new exhibition will open at the Museum on May 19 called Answering America’s Call: Newport News in World War I. The exhibition will commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in the “war to end all wars”. It will feature local voices and local stories of the transformational impact this war had on our region. Related family programming will be offered.
Throughout the summer, guests will encounter costumed historical interpreters, storytelling, arts and crafts, as well as limited-time viewing of objects not normally on display, Maritime Mondays, Lego shipbuilding, and scavenger hunts throughout the Museum.
